Liverpool have been urged to re-sign former midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum

Speaking in an interview as quoted by Mirror, former Liverpool star Stan Collymore has urged Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool to consider re-signing Georginio Wijnaldum, whose time at PSG has not been a success.

The former Reds midfielder left for the Parc des Princes on a free transfer last summer after failing to agree a new contract at Anfield. However, his time with the Ligue 1 giants has been far from happy with the Dutch international struggling for playing time. So far, he has played just 51% of the available minutes in the league this season.

Wijnaldum’s time in Paris has been hardly satisfactory and he could leave PSG next summer, just one year after joining them. Collymore is of the opinion that the Reds must make a low ball offer and try to bring their former star back to Anfield.

Wijnaldum had a great time at Liverpool

Collymore goes on to explain himself by saying that the 31-year-old will bring in a wealth of experience that could benefit youngsters like Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones. More so, he is already familiar with Liverpool’s style of play and could continue from where he left off.

“He’d be a great player for the youngsters at Anfield such as Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones to learn from.”

“He knows the way they play, he knows the manager well.”

Collymore reiterates the fact that Liverpool should consider the Dutch international only if he is available at a very cheap price. Whether the association is something that the club is keen on rekindling remains to be seen.

Does moving for Wijnaldum make sense?

Contrary to what Collymore says, we should not be considering resigning Wijnaldum, even if he is available at a low price. The midfielder has had many great moments in a Reds shirt but at 31, he is heading towards the fag end of his career and has shown signs of considerable decline.

There is no dearth of experience or options for Liverpool at the moment. We have Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and James Milner, who are all vastly experienced and can guide the youngsters at the club. Signing Wijnaldum is only going to threaten a youngster’s playing time, hampering his development.

Wijnaldum had the option to renew with us last summer and it was his decision to leave. While he may be regretting the decision at the moment, re-signing for the Reds should not be considered an option.

We could look at other younger options to strengthen our midfield. The Wijnaldum ship has sailed from Anfield and the flying Dutchman is better off sailing foreign shores.
