According to Leicestershire Live, Liverpool are said to be the favorites to sign Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans from Leicester City beating off competition from Arsenal and Manchester United.
The Reds have been interested in signing the midfielder for quite some time now. With Tielemans’s contract expiring in 2023, and with him yet to pen a new deal, many clubs around the world will be looking to secure the Belgian international on a cut-price deal this summer.
The Merseysiders however are not alone in their interest, with Manchester United and Arsenal also said to be very keen. More so, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus are also interested in Tielemans and could have an outside chance of landing him.
The Belgian plays predominantly as a central midfielder and can fulfill both defensive and attacking roles. He can also play in a box-to-box role and is capable of influencing the result at either end of the pitch.
The former Monaco man joined Leicester in 2019 initially on loan and eventually on a permanent deal and since then has gone on to establish himself a permanent fixture in Brendan Rodgers’ side. The 24-year-old has secured 10 goal contributions in 33 games across all competitions this season and it is very evident as to why the former Red’s manager would want to keep his star midfielder.
Tielemans’ contract expires in 2023 and there is a feeling that he may not renew with the Foxes, and will want to take the next big step in his career. Already capped 47 times for his nation, the quality that the Belgian possesses is quite evident. It is no surprise that several clubs are fighting for his signature in the summer.
Despite the Reds having a plethora of options in midfield, adding a player of Tielemans’ quality to the roster will not be a bad idea. The Belgian international will offer Jurgen Klopp something very different from the choices he already has, and could be the perfect replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum who left the club for PSG last season.
The Dutch international played the box-to-box role in Klopp’s midfield to perfection for many years, and there is no one in the current ranks who could fulfill that role with the same gusto. Signing Tielemans could solve the issue, with the Foxes midfielder capable of playing the Wijnaldum role perfectly.
While Brendan Rodgers is still hoping to make the Belgian stay at the King Power stadium in the future, if Tielemans fails to renew, the Foxes could look to move him on this summer and avoid losing him for free.
If Tielemans is available on the market for a decent price and if the Belgian prefers a move to Anfield, this move could be a no brainer for Jurgen Klopp and the Reds. Whether that will come to pass remains to be seen.
