Liverpool defender opens up after securing prestigious monthly accolade

Liverpool superstar Virgil Van Dijk opens up after being voted Standard Chartered Men’s player of the month

Speaking to Liverpool FC, Virgil Van Dijk has opened up on several topics after being voted Standard Chartered Men’s Player of the Month.

The Dutch defender was in outstanding form for the Reds in the month of February, starting and winning all seven games and keeping five clean sheets and conceding just two goals in the process.

Van Dijk has been a rock at the back for Liverpool.

This included a man of the match performance in the Carabao Cup final win against Chelsea in which the defender slotted home his penalty during the shootout.

Speaking after receiving the award, the Dutch centre-back admitted that it felt good to win the award after a while. Few will argue against him winning the accolade.

“Yeah, it’s been a while! I’m definitely proud and want to say thanks to everyone who has voted for me”

Van Dijk also added that February was a great month for the team and himself and also spoke about his penalty in the Carabao Cup final shootout. As someone who leads from the front, the 30-year-old walks the talk.

“No, it wasn’t a bad month at all! It’s something to build on”

A tremendous return from injury

Van Dijk was forced to miss out on almost the entirety of the previous campaign after suffering an ACL injury. There were a few doubts on how effective the Dutchman would be on his return to action after the long term injury.

The Reds defender however has picked up from where he left off, putting in solid performances week after week for Jurgen Klopp‘s team. Van Dijk has been an integral cog in the backline, influencing matches both with his defensive abilities and leadership.

As the 30-year-old centre-back himself admitted, it’s been a while since Van Dijk won the award with Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fabinho being previous recipients of the award this season.

Virgil van Dijk is one of the world’s best defenders.

Liverpool are still in contention for three different competitions this season, and Van Dijk is absolutely key to the going all the way. Klopp will hope that the Dutchman remains fit and firing for the rest of the season and helps the Reds in their quest for an unprecedented quadruple.
