The footballing gods might as well have been looking down at Anfield as Liverpool drew SL Benfica in the last eight of the UEFA Champions League.
The Reds progressed to the quarter-finals courtesy of a 2-1 aggregate win over Italian champions Inter Milan in the round of 16. While there are no easy draws at this stage, being paired against Benfica is as good as it gets.
The first leg will be played at the Estadio da Luz on 5/6 April followed by the return leg on 12/13 April at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp’s Reds go into the game as favourites and should be expected to get the job done with minimal fuss.
Should Liverpool come out on top in the tie, they will face either Bayern Munich or Villarreal in the last four. It must be admitted that the Reds drew the easiest opponents among the three English teams left in the fray.
The last time Liverpool drew Benfica was in 2005-06. The then defending champions, the Reds were knocked out 3-0 on aggregate by an impressive Eagles side who proved they belonged in the competition.
Klopp’s men will be keen to avoid the potential banana peel and should approach the game prepared. Liverpool could not have asked for a better draw and will only face another English side in the competition should they make it to the final.
We take a look at how some Liverpool fans reacted to the draw on Twitter. It is fair to say most of them were happy as we avoided the big guns such as Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich.
