Transfer News: Liverpool planning to make a £70m bid for Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski

According to Spanish outlet El Nacional (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are in pole position to sign Robert Lewandowski, with a £70m bid expected to be on the cards.

Lewandowski has developed himself to become one of the biggest stars in the world, dishing out one goal-laden season after another. This campaign has been no exception as the Polish star has already bagged 45 goals and four assists in 37 appearances

Lewandowski’s contract renewal scenario is not as straightforward as his on-field performances. Despite his deal running out in 2023, surprisingly, the Polish star hasn’t penned a new deal, creating a situation where the Bavarians could lose him in the upcoming windows.

Big names such as Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are interested in luring the top-form striker. However, Liverpool are believed to have the edge in the race with the Reds preparing a £70m bid to secure the transfer of the 33-year-old.

Wise move?

Liverpool are going through a contract stand-off of their own as Mohamed Salah hasn’t signed a contract extension yet. If the situation remains the same, Jurgen Klopp could lose his star performer in the coming transfer window, which would be a humongous blow to the team.

However, the Reds can’t leave their future hanging on one player’s decision. If the Egyptian decides to move on, then signing a forward may well become mission number one on the agenda of most LFC fans.

Precaution is always better than the cure- shortlisting alternatives in the market and planning a transfer approach doesn’t seem to be a bad idea for Liverpool at that time. But that would be a wise strategy to adopt if Salah was to move on.

Nevertheless, the amount quoted above for Lewa is a bit much, even if it is for a Ballon d’Or 2021 contender who is scoring goals for fun in Germany. That is because firstly, he doesn’t have experience of playing in the Premier League, and secondly, he would be 34 this August.

Apart from that, there is also the question of whether he would fit into Klopp’s system at the club were he to sign, given the German recently explained that to be a striker at Liverpool, you have to work your ‘f**cking socks off”.

This isn’t to say that he may not be a hit at LFC, but that we are better off focusing such funds elsewhere. Klopp has rarely ever signed a player beyond their 30s at Liverpool, let alone one who turns 34 this calendar year. It would certainly be a surprising sight if we do land the Polish striker this summer.
