Transfer News: Liverpool are frontrunners to sign Derry City starlet Trent Kone-Doherty

According to the Irish Independent (h/t Burnley Express), Liverpool are in the driving seat to sign Derry City youngster Trent Kone-Doherty.

The teenager has been making waves with his performances in the youth league of Northern Island. The teenager was being tipped for a move to a big club and this could be the perfect opportunity for the 15-year-old to take the next big step in his professional career.

The youngster who is majorly deployed on the wings is seemingly comfortable on both flanks. This versatility could be a great asset as Kone-Doherty has already represented Ireland at the under-16 and under-17 level scoring in friendlies against the likes of  Malta and Northern Ireland.

Liverpool and their love for budding talents

The youngster can be a great acquisition and would most likely go into our development team where he can gain more experience. Most top clubs usually prefer to give their young incoming talents the opportunity of a loan spell in a bid to give them more playing minutes.

Jurgen Klopp is also known for giving deserving youngsters an opportunity in the domestic cups which serve as a launching pad for the development into the senior squad. We have seen the likes of Tyler Morton and Kaide Gordon get their fair share of changes in domestic cups recently.

The Reds have become most notable for developing young talents like Trent Alexander Arnold, Curtis Jones, and Harvey Elliott who have started to make significant inroads into the senior squad at Anfield.

While purchasing a young starlet can be a double-edged sword, if done right it could not only potentially save the club millions in transfer fees but also instil the culture and DNA of the team to mould the player according to their needs.

Ever since the arrival of FSG, we have constantly been luring young talented players to the club with a solid eye for the future as well as keeping our sights firmly rooted in the present. This model has become greatly successful as the club has managed to lift a plethora of major trophies in the last few years.

We seem to be headed in the right direction as a club that focuses on not only purchasing established stars but also cultivating a positive atmosphere for young budding talents. The acquisition of the 15-year-old could therefore go on to future-proof our attacking lineup.
