Speaking to Goal as quoted by Liverpool Echo, Norwegian starlet Andreas Schjelderup has revealed that he turned down the chance to sign for Liverpool in 2020.
The 17-year-old attacking midfielder was plying his trade at Norwegian sideBodo/Glimt but his talented did not go unnoticed. Several super clubs across Europe were interested in signing him but he chose sign for Danish side FC Nordsjaelland to continue his development.
Liverpool along with Bayern Munich, Ajax Amsterdam and Juventus were mooted as possible destinations for Schjelderup but he eventually chose against a move to a big club and it has admittedly paid dividends.
Despite having the option to sign for big European clubs, the young midfielder does not regret his decision although he admitted
a little bit of hurt in rejecting the Liverpool offer.“Of course, it was a bit hard (turning down Liverpool), because when you grow up, you watch the big names and then you hear that they want you, so your head starts to spin. But I got a lot of help from my father and agents, who helped me make the right decision. It hurt a little bit for me and my dad in our hearts”
The Norwegian wonderkid is a very highly rated prospect and has impressed in 36 first team appearances for the Danish club. If the 17-year-old continues on the same vein, it may not be long before Europe once again comes calling for Schjelderup.
There are aspects of the game that the attacking midfielder will have to develop to succeed with the elite in Europe. Schjelderup could want to improve his goal output and chip in more consistently from midfield.
The Norwegian has all the raw materials required to become on of the best in Europe. He is yet to make his debut for the national team but it may not be long before the talented player is handed a debut for his country.
Schjelderup could follow in the steps of Martin Odegaard and Erling Haaland to become the next big thing in football. It remains to be seen if he fulfills his sky-high potential.
