Transfer News: Liverpool could be set for a transfer battle for Porto star Otavio

According to A Bola (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool could be set for a transfer battle for 27-year-old Porto winger Otavio.

The Porto winger has been a subject of interest from many Premier League clubs with Manchester United and Newcastle United also said to be in the race.

The right-winger has scored five goals and provided 12 assists for the Portuguese club this season in 40 games across all competitions. He has been performing consistently for Sergio Conceicao’s side and has been influential in the club’s fortunes.

The 27-year-old can play on either wing and also as an attacking midfielder and his versatility would prove to be a key factor for clubs to sign him. The forward’s contract expires in 2025 and the Portuguese club are in no rush to part with their forward.

Where could he fit in at the Reds?

At 27, Otavio is at a very appealing age for the Reds and is in his prime. He is neither too young nor too old and would be entering the best years of his career. There is every chance to believe that Jurgen Klopp can help take him to a higher level.

Liverpool have no dearth of wingers and signing Otavio would be just yet another addition to the list. It is not very clear what kind of a role the Portuguese will have.

Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are arguably two of the best wingers in the league, but they aren’t immortal and will turn 30 this year. Luis Diaz is a strong signing in that regard, but Diego Jota’s inclusion in the squad looks more like he is meant to be a striker rather than a winger for us.

With Salah’s contract standoff and Mane’s deal also expiring in the summer of 2023, we would have big decisions to make for our future. Whether Otavio has what it takes to thrive amidst the expectations at Anfield remains to be seen.

The Portuguese winger’s goal output is also somewhat underwhelming for a club of Liverpool’s stature. It remains to be seen if and how Otavio fits into the scheme of things in Anfield.
