According to ESPN (h/t Liverpool Echo), RB Leipzig will demand in excess of £63 million for Bundesliga breakout star Christopher Nkunku amidst interest from Liverpool.
Nkunku has been unbelievable for the Bundesliga club this season and has attracted interest worldwide. The 24-year-old is a subject of interest from many top European clubs and Liverpool are no different.
The attacking midfielder, who can also play further up a second striker or false nine has had a breakout season with Leipzig this time around. The former PSG youth star has scored 26 times and assisted a further 15 in 39 matches this season.
That is a jaw-dropping 41 goal contributions in 39 matches and it comes as no surprise that Nkunku is making heads turn. Liverpool, PSG, Manchester City, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Real Madrid are all said to be keen on the French star.
Having already made his national team debut, it is very likely that the German club will hold out for big money if they are to part with their star kid. ESPN claim that the figure could be around £63m. Meeting the price will make him one of the club’s most expensive signings ever.
Nkunku does not have a natural position at Anfield in Jurgen Klopp’s 4-3-3 system but can be utilised in a few different roles. This augurs well for a side that expects its players to fulfil multiple roles.
The former PSG wonderkid can fill in as a striker but drop deep and operate as a false-9 very similar to how Roberto Firmino operates. Nkunku could also start in one of the midfield positions and bomb forward almost like an attacking midfielder where he’ll be able to influence games in the final third.
There is also a possibility that Klopp could change his formation to more of a 4-2-3-1 to fit in Nkunku and make him play in his natural position. The French starlet is extremely talented and it will not be surprising to see him shine at Anfield.
At 24, he has a lot of room to develop and playing under a manager like Klopp is only likely to catalyse the process. The German manager is renowned for getting the best out of young players and Nkunku could be the latest addition to the list.
With so many clubs interested in the French attacker/midfielder, it will not be surprising to see Nkunku spark a bidding war amongst potential suitors. It remains to be seen if Liverpool have what it takes to convince the Leipzig man to come to Anfield.
