According to the German publication Bild (h/t The Express), Liverpool have received the wage demands of Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry amidst interest from Real Madrid for a potential transfer. He is being eyed as a replacement for Mohamed Salah, whose future at Anfield is far from certain at this point.
Salah still has not renewed his contract, which has forced the Reds to prepare for a worst-case scenario. As such, they have identified Gnabry as a potential target should the Egyptian leave them in the summer transfer window. The Bayern forward also has attracted interest from Real and Juventus as they look to get their hands on the attacker.
Gnabry will see his current contract expire after the next season, but he is currently engaged in talks over a renewal. However, Bayern Munchen are not willing to make compromises because of his wage demands of around £260,000-per-week
despite their interest to extend his deal. That has also put Jurgen Klopp’s side in a dilemma as those figures are more than Salah’s wages right now.Our priority should always be to tie down Salah on a new contract that he deserves. He currently earns a salary in the region of £200,000-a-week, which is eclipsed by Gnabry’s wage demands. However, it is believed that Salah wants around £400,000-a-week for a new deal, which is the reason why an agreement has not been reached just yet.
As such, it is understandable why we have not renewed Salah, as those numbers could disrupt the wage structure of any team. Both parties should make some compromises and find common ground as it would be in their best interests. Parting ways would be the last thing that anyone, at least at Liverpool, needs at this stage.
However, we need to prepare for the worst and safeguard our interests as well. As such, targeting Gnabry is a great choice on the Merseyside club’s part as he is one of the best in his positions at this instant. The 26-year-old’s wage demands are higher than Salah’s current salary, but it still falls short of the latter’s extension demands.
Gnabry has 14 goals and ten assists to his name this season from 38 appearances across all competitions. He certainly has the quality to fill in for Salah should the latter move elsewhere after the current campaign given his form in Germany and taste of English football with Arsenal.
Perhaps working under Jurgen Klopp could help Gnabry raise those numbers just as the boss did with Salah. But that is a hypothesis and one can truly tell how a player will fare at a new club. That being said, the latter has years left in his playing career, unlike the African, who is already nearing 30.
Even for Salah, a potential move to a new league, a new team, and a new system can disrupt the incredible career he has going on here. Klopp’s tactics clearly get the best out of him and it remains to be seen if any other team can help the Egyptian produce similar numbers.
