Transfer News: Liverpool target Marco Asensio and Real Madrid’s contract talks reach a dead end
According to El Nacional (h/t Liverpool Echo), Having been unable to meet the salary demands of Liverpool target Marco Asensio, Real Madrid have halted their contract talks with the Spanish international.
Asensio has developed himself into a reliable winger for Real Madrid. Scoring ten goals and bagging one assist in 34 matches across all competitions, the Spaniard has been impressive in this term as well.
Due to this impressive performance throughout the campaign, the 26-year old has come into the radar of Premier League giants Liverpool and Arsenal. Still young, he has time on his side to resurrect what as once a very promising career.
Asensio has a contract with the Madrid based team until 2023. Even though both parties want to extend the partnership, the Spaniard has been unsuccessful in convincing his team to give him a significant pay raise. As a result, contract renewal talks have been halted between them.
If the situation prevails, Asensio is expected to move away from Santiago Bernabeu. The Spaniard would have options in his hand if he decided to move to England. However, he would favour the option of staying with his old club rather than going to a foreign nation.
How can Liverpool use Asensio?
Apart from youngster Harvey Elliott, there isn’t any proper backup for Mohamed Salah in the right-winger spot. The Egyptian has been clinical against top teams, but his recent dip in form has shown the need for an alternative.
Asensio’s ability to operate in all the forward roles makes him a viable option for Liverpool. Along with top-notch dribbling skills, the Spaniard’s shooting abilities are also impressive, which could help him break defensive lines that implement the low block. Being an intelligent player, he knows how to create spaces, which Mane and Salah can attack in attacking plays.

26-years-old Asensio has a lot of peak years left in his legs. Even though he doesn’t have any Premier League experience, Liverpool star Thiago who has played with the Real Madrid star in the Spanish national team can help him settle in.
It remains to be seen what decision he makes regarding his next career move. Even though his priority remains staying with Los Blancos, the Reds board should prepare themselves for every possibility so that they can strike a deal when the opportunity comes.
