Transfer News: Liverpool learn asking price for Benfica star Darwin Nunez

According to the Empire of the Kop (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are said to be interested in signing Benfica striker Darwin Nunez and have learnt the asking price for the Uruguayan starlet.

Nunez scored Benfica’s solitary goal in his side’s loss to Liverpool as the Portuguese giants fell to a 1-3 defeat against the might Reds in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals. Whilst there is a second leg still to be played, it is very likely that the Reds already have a foot firmly planted in the semifinal.

The Uruguayan striker has been in superb form this season and continues to perform week in, week out for Benfica. He is their main striking force, consistently chipping in with big goals on the biggest of stages.

The 22-year-old has a release clause with the Portuguese club quoted to be apparently £125m but it is being reported that if Liverpool or any other club want to sign the striker, then Benfica will be allowing the Uruguayan to leave for half his release clause.

Huge talent?

Nunez has scored 31 goals in 36 matches for Benfica this season and has been rightfully billed as one of the biggest prospects in Europe. If his impressive form continues, it will not be surprising to see European giants fighting for his signature and Liverpool must act quick.

The match at Anfield in a week’s time could pretty much turn out to be an audition for Darwin Nunez if the Reds are actually serious about signing him. The Benfica striker did no harm to his chances with his performance last week and if he manages to inspire the Portuguese club to the unthinkable a week later, Nunez would have a chapter written for him in history.

It will also make the whole world take notice of him- if they already haven’t, that is. Liverpool could do with a new, pure number 9. Divock Origi has clearly not earned the trust of Jurgen Klopp as a regular starter.

Roberto Firmino isn’t getting any younger, while Diogo Jota is a versatile forward who could use some competition to start as our number 9. The Uruguayan, in this regard, has a high ceiling and training under a manager like Jurgen Klopp is only bound to improve him into a better player.

Nunez could be a useful signing for Liverpool, but it also depends on a lot of other factors. There is no doubting the Uruguayan’s potential and he is destined to make it big , at Anfield or elsewhere.

But the price being quoted above is just too much. It would comfortably break Liverpool’s transfer record. It remains to be seen if Benfica lower the asking price and if the Reds would want to go into the market for another forward after splashing the cash on Luis Diaz in January.
