According to The Independent, the Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has opened up on how important it is for the Liverpool team to win titles in the current campaign.
Liverpool have made it to three semi-finals in major tournaments (FA Cup, Champions League and Carabao Cup) for the first time this season. Having already won the Carabao Cup earlier this season, they stand on the cusp of history.
Despite staying alive in all competitions in mid-April, the season is far from done. While a quadruple is still on, there is still much to play for and some difficult games to negotiate. Klopp believes they need to do more to be remembered as a successful team.
Liverpool are set to face Manchester City today in the FA Cup semi-final, which is going to be a massive test for them if they want to keep their quadruple dream alive. Pep Guardiola’s side are no pushovers and achieving the task is easier said than done.
In the pre-match press conference, when asked about the historical achievement of reaching three semi-finals, Jurgen Klopp replied that the people will not remember the performances in the long run if they fail to secure trophies.
“Imagine if we had done the same for five years, heh? That would be great! Three semi-finals and winning nothing. The world is not ready for this kind of success. This specific thing, nobody did it in this club, so it is really special. But, yeah… I know if that is the success this year, it will not be seen as success in the future.”
Even though the Liverpool team have played impressively under Klopp the last few seasons, their efforts didn’t have a massive influence on the minds of football fans worldwide as they have not exactly won the trophies their displays deserve.
Very few of us even check how a top team performed in previous competitions if they don’t get to the final or win the title. Considering such a mindset, Jurgen Klopp’s verdicts seem apt.
Liverpool will face Manchester City for the second time in six days. After meeting Pep Guardiola’s team today, the Reds have two Premier League fixtures before taking on Villareal in the Champions League semi-final.
Liverpool have the chance to complete the quadruple in this campaign as they are fighting for all four major titles. However, the hectic schedule and the intensity of the coming matches make the road tricky for the Reds.
