Transfer News: Liverpool among the clubs in the race for Darwin Nunez
According to The Boot Room reports, via The Independent (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are amongst the clubs that could be involved in the transfer tussle for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.
The Uruguayan striker has been in superb form this season and continues to perform week in, week out for Benfica. He is their main striking force, consistently chipping in with big goals on the biggest of stages. Benfica are believed to value Nunez at £65m, a rather impressive price.
Nunez scored Benfica’s solitary goal in his side’s loss to Liverpool as the Portuguese giants fell to a 1-3 defeat against the mighty Reds in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals. He then came to Anfield and scored yet another goal in Benfica’s impressive 3-3 draw in the second leg.
Following his breathtaking displays against the mighty Reds, Europe has taken notice of Darwin Nunez. Premier League clubs Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham want to sign the Uruguayan.
Solid option?
Nunez has scored 32 goals in 37 matches for Benfica this season and has been rightfully billed as one of the biggest prospects in Europe. If his impressive form continues, it will not be surprising to see European giants fighting for his signature and Liverpool must act quick.
The Benfica striker did no harm to his chances with his performances against Liverpool and if the two-legged affair was an audition for the Benfica forward, it’s safe to say that he came out in flying colours.
Liverpool could do with a new, pure number 9. Divock Origi has clearly not earned the trust of Jurgen Klopp as a regular starter. He could be set to leave Anfield.
Roberto Firmino isn’t getting any younger, while Diogo Jota is a versatile forward who could use some competition to start as our number 9. The Uruguayan, in this regard, has a high ceiling and training under a manager like Jurgen Klopp is only bound to improve him into a better player.

Nunez could be a solid signing for Liverpool, but it also depends on a lot of other factors. There is no doubting the Uruguayans’ potential and he is destined to make it big, at Anfield or elsewhere.
