Cristiano Ronaldo expresses his gratitude to Liverpool following Anfield gesture

Taking to Instagram (h/t The Independent), Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed his gratitude to Liverpool fans following the incredible show of support levied in his favour at Anfield.

The Portuguese ace’s world came crashing down when he lost his newborn son a day before the trip to Merseyside. Despite the rivalry, Reds fans put their differences aside to applaud the player’s name in the seventh minute of their match against Manchester United on Tuesday.

In a game that celebrates tribalism, the show of togetherness at a genuine time of grief was a welcome gesture. While it will not take away Ronaldo’s loss, it could help temper it to an extent.

The impact of the gesture at Anfield was not lost on Ronaldo, who has now broken his silence on the matter. The 37-year-old appreciates the show of solidarity and revealed that he will never forget it.

This comes after the player’s sister, Elma, also praised Liverpool for their actions. Given that some things transcend football and rivalries, we are glad that the club and their supporters could do what is in their power to provide strength to the bereaved.

Ronaldo has been Man United’s best player this season and the Red Devils have been largely reliant on him for inspiration. The attacker missed the trip to Anfield but has now returned to training. He is likely to return to action later this week against Arsenal.

Just how he responds and how the fans respond on the night remain to be seen. If anything, Liverpool fans have once again shown that there are times when one should look beyond colours and allegiances and stick together.

Klopp’s side was triumphant on the night, scoring four unanswered goals to go temporarily top of the Premier League table. The Reds face Everton in the Merseyside derby on the weekend in what looks set to be a hard-fought game.

A win means putting the pressure right back on Man City who look imperious every time they are in a close title race. It would take a massive effort to finally pip them to the crown but if anyone can do it, it’s us.
