Transfer News: Liverpool are interested in signing Austrian midfielder Konrad Laimer
According to Kicker via SportWitness (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are interested in signing Bundesliga midfielder Konrad Laimer who plies his trade for RB Leipzig.
A player who has come through the Red Bulls ranks, Laimer played for Salzburg’s youth team and first-team before moving to Leipzig in 2017. He has since gone on to establish himself as an important cog in the German team.
The 24-year-old has scored five goals and provided six assists in 36 matches this season for the Bundesliga side. Capable of playing in a defensive midfield role too, Laimer’s main position lies in the centre of midfield as he looks to control games from there.
The Austrian has a contract with the German club until 2023, and he is keen on completing the current season and then making a decision on his future. Liverpool are said to be keen on bringing the talented midfielder to Anfield but they will not be alone with Manchester United and Bayern Munich also said to be interested in the player.
A good addition?
Despite Liverpool’s astounding squad quality, there is no denying the fact that midfield is one area where Klopp’s squad is a little under par in comparison to the other positions.
They have two very talented youngsters in Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott who could turn out to be superstars although the latter’s future seems to lie further ahead on the pitch and not in midfield.
Thiago Alcantara is world-class but struggles to stay fit. Jordan Henderson is ageing and might not have much time left. Naby Keita does not inspire confidence.

There remains a gaping hole in midfield ever since Georginio Wijnaldum left for PSG last summer. Konrad Laimer might be the answer to reinforce the midfield area for the Reds.
Laimer has all the attributes to succeed in a Klopp midfield and he would be a welcome addition to the Reds squad. It remains to be seen if a move materialises.
