Transfer News: Liverpool are interested in PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo

According to VI (h/t LiverpoolEcho), Liverpool are the latest to join a handful of Premier League teams in the race of hugely talented winger Cody Gakpo

Cody Gakpo has been one of the best players of PSV Eindhoven so far in this campaign. Scoring 18 goals and providing 15 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions, the Dutch star has wreaked havoc in the transfer market.

It seems his impressive display hasn’t gone unnoticed by Premier League heavyweights either. Manchester City and Arsenal were already keeping a close tab on the 22-year-old Dutch star. Now, it is believed that Liverpool have joined the race.

However, whether Gakpo will leave his current club is still not clear as the Dutch star is currently in conversation with manager Ruud van Nistelrooy regarding a further stay beyond his current contract terms.

Should Liverpool sign Cody Gakpo?

Liverpool currently have three exceptional players for the left-winger’s role: Sadio Mané, Luis Díaz and Takumi Minamino. This kind of stability and depth seems top-notch, which several other Premier League teams can’t afford at this point.

Sadio Mané has been the prime choice of Jurgen Klopp so far and there’s no surprise considering the stature and consistency of the Senegal international.

The German manager signed Takumi Minamino in 2020, but hasn’t used the Japanese star much this term, affording him only seven starts across all competitions.

In the winter transfer window, the Reds board went big and signed Porto’s Luis Díaz who has mesmerised the fans with his impressive performances. His arrival would hurt Minamino’s chances even more in the following season.  In such a situation, even if Liverpool completes the signing of Gakpo, chances are he would be left on the bench for most of the matches in the first few months.

As Mane is getting older, a natural successor would be needed down in the line. But, the situation hasn’t arrived yet and the Senegal star’s spot is secured for quite some time.

Considering all the aspects, Reds might be more benefited if they sign a right winger as the requirement of a fresh refreshment in that spot is more than that of left wing.
