Liverpool target Christopher Nkunku is eyeing a £55m release clause in his contract.

According to Liverpool.com, Liverpool target Christopher Nkunku is closing on a renewal deal with RB Leipzig, which would include a release clause.

Christopher Nkunku is undergoing a breakthrough spell in the Bundesliga. By scoring 30 goals and providing 20 assists in 46 appearances this season, the French attacker has helped his team secure a respectable spot in the Bundesliga table.

Nkunku’s impressive display has caught the eyes of some European heavyweights, Liverpool being one of them. As the 24-year old’s contract expires in 2024, he could have pressurised Leipzig to sanction an exit next summer. But it seems the Frenchman has other ideas.

Christopher Nkunku is eyeing completing a renewal contract with RB Leipzig. However, the catch in his contract is set to be a release clause that would allow any team to secure the services of the Frenchman by paying £55m a year in advance.

It seems advantageous for both parties as the team would make a whopping profit from selling a player that they bought from PSG for £11m in the summer of 2019.

Can Liverpool take advantage of the release clause?

Liverpool’s interest in Nkunku has remained intact in recent times. The Reds might fancy adding a fresh reinforcement to their ageing midfield. There would be a time when the Reds have to replace their crucial midfielders, and Nkunku certainly fits the profile.

Even though Thiago, Jordan Henderson, and Naby Keïta remain top Premier League players at the current time, by the time Nkunku’s release clause kicks in, they would probably need to be replaced.

The Frenchman’s intentions would matter a lot regarding his next destination. However, our board can start building a good relationship with the player’s entourage. In that way, the attacking midfield star would get to know about our interests in him.

By keeping a close tab on the situation, the Reds can potentially strike a deal at the right moment.  It remains to be seen when Nkunku signs his renewal. But if he disagrees with putting his signature on the deal, our board should make a priority attempt to contract his agents.
