Transfer News: Juventus are ready to pay £11m for Liverpool and Greece left-back Kostas Tsimikas

According to Juve Dipendenza via Caught Offside (h/t Liverpool Echo), Italian giants Juventus are prepared to splash the cash to sign Liverpool star Kostas Tsimikas in the summer transfer window.

The 25-year-old joined the Reds from Olympiakos in the summer of 2020 and has since made 28 appearances for the club, providing six assists. He initially struggled to make a mark at Anfield but has come into his own element this season.

Tsimikas is the club’s second-choice left-back behind Andrew Robertson. The Scot is arguably the league’s best player in his position and Tsimikas, despite his improved showings, has some way to go before displacing him.

Liverpool for their part, make full use of dual purposed full-backs who bomb up and down the wing to great effect. Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold are without doubt the first choice duo but Tsimikas’ arrival has handed Jurgen Klopp an excellent backup player to call upon.

What should LFC do?

With all of his six assists for the club coming this season, the Greek international has impressed one and all. Juventus for one are ready to splash out £11m to secure the 25-year-old’s services in the summer.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side has surrendered their position as Italy’s top side to Inter Milan and have been far from impressive the last couple of seasons. The likes of Alex Sandro and Luca Pellegrini have done well at left-back but lack the cutting edge when it comes to making a difference.

It is clear to see why Juventus want to sign the Liverpool star, given his ability to not just defend solidly but also attack with impunity. The fact that they are willing to spend less than what Liverpool paid for him two summers ago is laughable.

There is no need for the Reds to sell Tsimikas nor the player to seek a move elsewhere. There is little to suggest he is unhappy on Merseyside and is, on the contrary, enjoying life to the fullest.

A move to Turin will be akin to taking a step back for Tsimikas. While not the first choice at Anfield, 21 of his 28 appearances for the club have come this season. With Jurgen Klopp showing himself capable of rotating the squad, the Greek ace will get his opportunities to impress.

Liverpool are today amongst the best clubs in world football and quitting Anfield seeking greener pastures elsewhere is akin to career suicide. As for the Reds, it is important to have a quality backup in each position and instead of weakening the left-back area, the club would be wise to instead go out and seek a player akin to Tsimikas to deputise on the right-hand side whenever Trent Alexander-Arnold is unavailable.
