James Milner contract latest: Liverpool hold talks to extend England international’s Anfield stay
According to Goal (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have held ‘initial talks’ with regards to extending the contract of veteran midfielder, James Milner. The Englishman is currently on a deal that expires this summer.
He is a player that Jurgen Klopp apparently likes and is keen to keep at Anfield beyond this summer. He has relayed that desire to upcoming Sporting Director Julian Ward as well as the player, and it remains to be seen if the ex-Newcastle United man decides to put pen to paper on a new deal.
Milner is the prototype of a player that every manager would love to have on their team. With over 800 senior club appearances in close to 19 years of senior football, Milner is a legend of the game and a Premier League stalwart.
His versatility to play in midfield and even as a full-back has come in handy for Klopp on multiple occasions, with the Englishman playing a big part in our run to the UEFA Champions League final in 2018 and then 2019.
And it doesn’t come as a surprise that the gaffer likes him and wants him to be here for a little longer. Milner is a leader on and off the pitch, and one of the most important voices in the dressing room.
Having worn the captain’s armband on several occasions in the absence of Jordan Henderson, he knows what it means to lead a team such as the Reds. It is safe to say he is arguably one of this club’s best ever free signings.
New contract for James Milner?
The ex-Manchester City midfielder is now restricted to cameos, especially after Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita’s recent fitness record. But if his performance against Newcastle this weekend was anything to go by, he still has some gas left in his tanker.
It is pretty obvious he would not be a pinned starter if he were to extend his deal at the club. But he would be an extra pair of legs for cup competitions- one who we can rely on to give it his all on the pitch and lead those around him.
