Transfer News: Liverpool linked with a move for Hoffenheim left-back David Raum

As per German outlet Sport Bild (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are amongst ‘interested parties’ that are considering making a move for TSG Hoffenheim star, David Raum.

The German left-back joined Die Kraichgauer from Greuther Furth last season and has been a revelation this term for the Bundesliga side. He currently has 3 goals and 13 assists from 30 league games this campaign, playing for the team that sold us Roberto Firmino back in 2015.

Those are numbers that can certainly make one stand up and take notice. Raum can play as a left-wing back and is not a shabby option to have going forward for any team with those numbers. In fact, he has largely played in a more advanced role than that of left-back for a good part of his career.

But then again, one could question the reasoning behind LFC making a potential move. The club already has a world-class left-back in Andrew Robertson and an equally impressive backup in Kostas Tsimikas.

The ‘Greek Scouser’, as our fans love to call him, is already struggling for starts despite showing impressive performances whenever called upon. Adding a third name to this list makes no real sense.

Do LFC need Raum?

Robertson, who played as a left-back for Hull City before his move to Anfield, is also a smart defender off the ball. The balance that he provides in defence, as well as attack, has helped Jurgen Klopp solidify the left flank as an area that looks like it needs no immediate strengthening.

Rather, the Reds would be wise to look for a player that can deputise for Trent Alexander-Arnold in the same way that Tsimikas does for Robertson. Currently, the Reds don’t have a lot of options down that flank.

Neco Williams has been loaned out this season while Joe Gomez has seen some of his best days in a Liverpool shirt at centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk. We can always use the Englishman in that position when we want to give rest to the big Dutchman or Joel Matip.

It is claimed that four other English teams apart from Liverpool are keen on the German left-back. If that is the case, the Reds are better off not involving themselves in a potential transfer battle for a player who, quite frankly, doesn’t have a space cut out for him at Liverpool.
