Post-Match Quotes: Jurgen Klopp gives his verdict on PL title race after Liverpool draw vs Tottenham Hotspur

Speaking after the draw against Tottenham Hotspur (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp refused to throw in the towel in the Premier League title race despite a disappointing result on the night.

The Reds had a mixed game against the Lilywhites, who clearly came to Anfield with a game plan to sit back, defend, and hit us on the counter. As it turns out, it worked, when Fabinho’s callousness of the ball and Andrew Robertson’s shocking marking gave Spurs the advantage.

The goal, that came in the second half from Son Heung-min, was later cancelled out by Luis Diaz around the 74th-minute mark. A deflected goal from the Colombian meant that the Reds had time to grab the winner and build a two-point lead at the top of the table.

But the game finished 1-1, partly due to some uncharacteristically poor play from Mohamed Salah where he constantly failed to make the most of the dangerous positions he found himself in. The team, on the whole, weren’t that good but in games like these, we expect the FWA Player of the Year to come to the fore and make the difference.

The Reds now sit at the top of the table, level on points with Manchester City but ahead on goal difference. The Cityzens play against Newcastle United tomorrow with a chance to overtake the Reds by three clear points going into gameweek 36.

Not the end of the world

Given how they have been in the league this season, it is hard to see City slipping up from here. And as for Klopp, such hiccups are expected and Liverpool will go again next week.

“It was always clear something like this could happen. There are games to play and we just have to keep going.”

Klopp is correct. We have the FA Cup final against Chelsea and the UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid later this month, which puts us on course to win a very prestigious treble.

Even the title race isn’t completely over. Anything but a loss for the Magpies tomorrow will make Liverpool fans believe again. We have come too far to give up in the title race with Man City still having four games left. It isn’t over until it is over.
