Club chief confirms 50-goal striker wants to leave amidst Liverpool links

Transfer News: Liverpool target Robert Lewandowski wants to leave Bayern Munich this summer

Bayern Munich director Hasan Salihamidzic has apparently told Sky Sports (h/t Mirror) that Robert Lewandowski

, who has been on the radar of Liverpool in recent weeks, wants to leave this summer.

The Polish striker has been linked with the Reds, with Interia Sport even claiming that some preliminary talks were held regarding the superstar’s future. But wanting to leave and actually managing to leave before your contract ends are, of course, two different things.

Salihamidzic claims that while the former Borussia Dortmund hitman has conveyed that he wants to leave the current Bundesliga champions for another club, Bayern’s stance on his future remains the same. His contract expires next summer.

“Yes, Lewandowski informed me that he didn’t want to accept our offer and he would like to leave the club. Our position has not changed, Lewa has a contract until 2023. That is a fact.”

Bayern would know that if Lewa doesn’t want to renew his deal, then this summer window is their best chance to get some money in transfer fees for him. Otherwise, the striker will be free to discuss a Bosman transfer from January 2023.

Lewa to LFC?

If the Reds maintain their interest and actually want to act on it, then it may be the coup of the summer. Sure, he’s 33. But he has scored 50 times in 46 games across all competitions.

His finishing quality is there for all to see. The Reds lack that force up front with Roberto Firmino and recent makeshift forward Sadio Mane lacking that natural number nine’s finishing touch on a consistent basis.

LFC fans would find it hard to remember the last time Jurgen Klopp signed a player above 32 years of age. But Lewandowski, who made his name at Westfalenstadion under Liverpool’s current German manager, can be a very useful short-term addition.

He doesn’t have to play every game and become the player we build our team around. But slot him in the attack and the Reds would have in their side one of the deadliest finishers of our generation.

For that to happen, however, the Reds would have to formalise any interest they may hold in the player. Bayern would also have to agree to let Lewa go- if he wants to leave this summer- and the Pole’s decision regarding his potential next destination will also be a telling factor.
