According to the Daily Mirror (h/t Express), Liverpool have secured a ‘first refusal’ on FC Porto playmaker Fabio Vieira. This doesn’t mean that the Reds have struck an agreement to instantly sign the 21-year-old youngster.
But the Reds would get first preference should the Portugal U21 international want to leave the Dragao in the future. He apparently has a £12.7million release clause in his contract but suitors would also have to meet some add-ons to get a potential deal across the line.
It is clear that the Reds are planning for the future. A deal for Fabio Carvalho has already been struck with Fulham with the teenager arriving at Anfield this summer.
And it seems LFC have already earmarked another young Portuguese playmaker to add to the mix. Porto have historically produced some of Europe’s most talented players and Vieira could well be one of them.
He has seven goals and 16 assists in 39 games this season, which are some serious numbers for a 21-year-old. Porto already sold Luis Diaz to us this January and have used Marko Grujic’s services in recent years.
Raul Meireles was another talented player to have switched Porto for Anfield more than a decade back. It remains to be seen what approach the clubs take with regards to Vieira now.
He is clearly an important part of Sergio Conceicao’s Dragons, who are already crowned Primeira Liga champions this season and will play Tondela in the Taca de Portugal final in a week’s time.
With Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, Carvalho, and possibly Vieira sometime in the future, the future seems bright for the Reds even when Jurgen Klopp decides to depart Anfield- as much as we would all be praying for that day to never come.
