Transfer News: Liverpool keeping tabs on AS Roma playmaker Nicolo Zaniolo
According to transfer news on Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Mirror), Liverpool are ‘monitoring’ AS Roma star Nicolo Zaniolo ahead of the summer window. The player is rated around £59million.
The Italian playmaker is an important part of Jose Mourinho’s team and has become a regular starter in recent seasons. The ex-Inter Milan ace is now on the radar of Liverpool, who aren’t alien to signing talented forwards from the Giallorossi.
Mohamed Salah arrived from Rome back in 2017 and Liverpool’s fortunes have completely changed since then. If Zaniolo can be half that player, the Reds would be wise to go all out for the 22-year-old.
He already has nine caps for the Italian national, scoring twice in the process and is a creative force to reckon with in the final third of the pitch for his team. Liverpool seem like they are happy to stock their midfield with talented young midfielders.
They have already signed Fabio Carvalho, are linked with Fabio Vieira, and Jurgen Klopp has transitioned Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones from wingers to central midfielders. Adding Zaniolo to the mix makes things even more exciting.
Zaniolo to LFC?
He is perhaps farther than all players mentioned above when it comes to his development as a top senior footballer. Apparently, his contract is up in the summer of 2024 but he could be on the move this summer itself.
Those who have followed his career up until now would know that he is now being utilised out wide on the right flank. If that is the idea Klopp has in his mind as well, granted Zaniolo ever signs for us, then the Italian wouldn’t be a shabby understudy to Mohamed Salah.

Then again, only time will tell if Liverpool will dip into the transfer market for Zaniolo. If signed, he would join a select group of Italians to join the Reds with the likes of Alberto Aquilani, Mario Balotelli, Andrea Dossena, Gabriel Paletta, Daniele Padelli, and Fabio Baroni having already been on our books over the past couple of decades.
