Transfer News: Fabrizio Romano claims Liverpool will hold talks with Sadio Mane over new contract amid Bayern Munich interest
According to Fabrizio Romano (h/t Liverpool.com), Liverpool are set to hold talks with Sadio Mane over his future at the club, amidst recent links with Bayern Munich. His contract at Anfield expires next summer.
Seeing the Senegal international’s name being associated with the German giants has come as a surprise for LFC fans this month. And Romano explains that Robert Lewandowski’s overt desire to join Barcelona could lead Bayern to accelerate their interest in Mane.
It is good to know that the Reds are apparently prepared to react to Bayern’s interest and hold talks with Mane. With Jurgen Klopp’s men completely focused on winning the quadruple, it is safe to assume that we may get to know more about Mane’s future once the club is done with this season.
The team would not want any distractions when two trophies are still on the line. West Ham United’s draw against Manchester City yesterday gives the Merseysiders an outside chance of winning the league title.
After that, there is one little game to take care of in Paris on 28th May. The Reds take Real Madrid on in the UEFA Champions League final- a tournament Mane has often impressed in for Liverpool.
What next for Mane?
It is hard to question Romano’s logic above. If Bayern lose Lewandowski, they could accelerate their interest in any player they deem to be his replacement- Mane included.
After all, dominating German football isn’t really an easy task especially if you are suddenly without a striker who netted 50 goals in all competitions this season. Mane, on the other hand, is equally important for Liverpool.
And if we lose our star forward, fans would certainly hope the club has plans to replace him. Mane has shown his versatility over the years at the club. He started his career at Anfield on the right-hand side and excelled there.
Mohamed Salah’s arrival saw the Senegalese star being shifted to the left flank, where he is one of the best in the world at what he does. And recently, Roberto Firmino’s injury saw him take up the centre-forward role.
He may be 30, but he is in no way finished. In fact, he is arguably in the prime of his career- helping the Lions of Teranga win the AFCON earlier this year and making himself a strong candidate for this year’s Ballon d’Or award.

And that is why the Reds would be smart to do everything they can to keep Mane and not let him get enticed by the prospect of moving to the Bundesliga- where Bayern have dominated historically.
