Speaking in the pre-match press conference before the Premier League clash against Southampton (h/t Liverpool Echo), Jurgen Klopp urged the FA to send more medals after Liverpool beat Chelsea in the Cup final this weekend.
The Reds make use of their squad to a great extent in cup competitions and it is imperative that players who played their part are rewarded for their contributions. Klopp has now publicly underlined his message about requesting the FA for medals.
“We can’t play the same 11 players. But why are there restrictions on medals. Please send more medals. The squad gets bigger but the numbers stay the same.”
According to Daily Mail, Klopp made similar comments regarding the Carabao Cup as well. FA rules state that 40 medals are handed to either side after the final, with LFC having used 33 players in the EFL Cup and 31 in the FA Cup.
Klopp is, of course, spot-on here. The medals have to be distributed amongst coaches, members of staff, and the players.
It is a tangible reward for the hard work they put in and it is a shame FA hasn’t paid heed to Klopp’s request until now. We saw young players like Elijah-Dixon Bonner, Kaide Gordon, and Max Woltman play in the third round of the FA Cup against Shrewsbury this season.
It isn’t known which players are yet to receive their medals, or if it is the coaching staff that hasn’t gotten theirs. But it is safe to assume that the senior players who played a role in the last couple of matches in this competition would have been given theirs.
This is a problem LFC fans would have seen their team face after a long time- if it isn’t the first time it is happening- given our lack of domestic cup titles in recent years. Having won the FA and Carabao Cup this season, Klopp has completed the set at Liverpool.
Under the German, we have won each major trophy that isn’t a one-off game, such as the Charity Shield, at least one time. He now has the chance to start increasing those numbers with the PL and UEFA Champions League on the line later this month.
