Jordan Henderson explains why he consoled Chelsea star Mason Mount after FA Cup final penalty miss
While Liverpool players were celebrating their FA Cup win against Chelsea in the final, Jordan Henderson took time out to console England teammate Mason Mount.
That is the player he is. A leader on and off the pitch for the Reds, Hendo has really matured into becoming one of the finest captains in European football- one who understands what it takes to wear the armband for us.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, the former Sunderland midfielder explained why he approached Mount after Kostas Tsimikas netted the winning penalty for LFC.
“You’ve got to be respectful to the opponent, especially with players you play with from your national team.”
It was Mount’s penalty that was saved by Alisson Becker to set up the chance for the ‘Greek Scouser’ to become our hero. And he did. But to spare a thought for the opponent even when you’re feeling the highest of highs is what separates Hendo from most.
“I knew he’d be feeling really down and to be honest, he probably didn’t want me going over there thinking back, but I just wanted to give him a little bit of support because he’s a top player, a great lad and he’s still very young.”

Henderson has also been a really important player for Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions over the years. Despite Harry Kane being handed the armband, it is often Liverpool’s number 14 that rallies the troops when wearing the England shirt.
It is a brilliant sight to see Henderson succeed at this level. Barely anyone could have envisaged this when he was struggling for form at the club in his first couple of seasons.
The first captain to lift six different trophies, he is in the conversation amongst the LFC greats- including Steven Gerrard- at least as a captain. Gerrard was one of the best players of his time but was arguably not blessed with teammates that Hendo plays with under a coach like Jurgen Klopp.

Hendo now has the task of leading LFC to just their second Premier League title since the league title was rebranded. A win against Southampton tonight is a must but with Manchester City playing Aston Villa at home, it is expected that the Cityzens get all three points- unless, of course, Hendo’s predecessor, Stevie G, has something to say about it.
