Three Liverpool players look set to miss out on Premier League medals should the Reds clinch the title

According to the Daily Express, Three Liverpool youngsters will not be awarded a winners’ medal even if the Merseyside team wins the Premier League later tonight.

Liverpool are set to go to the final match of the season trailing Manchester City by a single point. Even though the Reds have to win their fixture against Wolves, they also have to rely on Aston Villa to do their part against Manchester City.

However, even if Jurgen Klopp’s men manage to overcome the odds, not every member of the squad will be awarded a medal for their efforts.

Tyler Morton has featured in two matches in the Premier League this season.

Premier League rule implies that every outfield player has to play at least five matches to be eligible to receive a winner’s medal. However, Reds youngsters Tyler Morton, Kaide Gordon and Neco Williams haven’t fulfilled the criteria as they all have played less than five games.

Morton got the closest of the three as he has featured in two matches. Meanwhile, Gordon and Williams have both played one game each in this term, resulting in the non-eligibility. Given the minimal role they have played in the campaign, it is understandable should they miss out.

The rule is a little different for goalkeepers as they only have to play in one game for securing the eligibility which means Caoimhin Kelleher would get his winning medal if Liverpool win the Premier League.

Blow for the youngsters?

Even though the first team players contribute the most in a successful run, the youngsters also play a pretty significant role behind the scenes. Having them in the group, the manager feels safe and secure as he would have a choice of backup in case of any emergency.

Last season, backup players like Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams stepped up during the crisis and helped the team secure a top-four finish. Those called upon this season have also done their job irrespective of the time afforded to them on the field.

Getting a medal boosts the confidence of such players and makes them committed to the project. That’s why the three youngsters might have liked to get one each, but that seems unlikely in this case.

But on the other hand, it should motivate them to put in their best efforts in the coming campaign and burst onto the first team season regularly. Liverpool have an ageing squad currently and Jurgen Klopp’s job could get easier if some young players show convincing performances.
