Talking to Club del Deportista magazine as published by Marca (h/t Liverpool Echo), Federico Valverde spoke about Liverpool star Mohamed Salah ‘disrespecting’ his team ahead of the UEFA Champions League final.

The Egyptian star has spoken multiple times about taking revenge against Los Blancos for their victory in the 2018 UCL final. It took a couple of individual errors and an ugly tactic by Sergio Ramos to see Mohamed Salah get injured for Madrid to win their 13th Champions League crown.

In that context, it is not surprising to see Salah respectfully suggest that he wanted to play Madrid in the final to take revenge. Everyone and their dogs would know that the ex-AS Roma man would love to score against Los Galacticos for the personal disappointment they caused him four years ago.

And Valverde has, for some reason, taken offence to it. Perhaps the Uruguayan international thinks too much of his club and that others should cower at the mere mention of playing against them.

“I’m his opponent and it’s like disrespecting the Real Madrid badge, the players. The only thing we must do is give our best, try to show why we’re in the final and let’s hope we can give another trophy to the fans and to Real Madrid.”

What’s the fuss about?

Madrid are in the UCL final just because two of their hopeful crosses found their target in the last two minutes against Manchester City in the second leg of the semi-final.

The Reds are the team to fear going into this game, with Klopp’s men already winning two cups and racking up 92 points in the league this season. Salah’s comments, of course, would have made some LFC fans jumpy as well.

These can always come back to haunt the team if they lose in the end. And maybe Los Galacticos‘ players do mention it if they manage to beat us but there is nothing wrong with what Salah said.

He was asked which team he wanted in the final, and he told them the answer. He was then asked if he wants revenge and answered what everyone already knew.

If anyone takes offence to this, it speaks more about them than the Liverpool winger. Maybe Madrid aren’t the club they once were, with no Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos both gone- but the superiority complex clearly still remains.
