Transfer News: PSV Eindhoven to give special contract to Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City target Cody Gakpo

According to Eindhovens Dagblad via Voetabl Primeur (h/t Liverpool Echo), Cody Gakpo is set to receive a special contract offer from PSV Eindhoven in order to fend off transfer interest from Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool for at least another year.

The Dutch winger has been on the radar of top Premier League clubs and could take the next step in his career this summer. But the Boeren want to keep him at Philips Stadion for at least another year.

And for this, they are preparing to offer him a special contract that will see him personally pocket a part of the eventual transfer fee. He is currently expected to cost around £34million.

Gakpo has had a season to remember in the Eredivisie. His team may not have won the league title but he has racked up 21 goals and 15 assists in 47 games across all competitions this campaign.

He can play down either flank in attack and as a centre-forward. This kind of versatility is seen in a couple of Liverpool’s current attacking stars such as Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane.

Gakpo to LFC?

Unfortunately for the Reds, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah’s futures at Anfield are not certain. While the Egyptian has claimed that he will stay at LFC for the next season, Mane has remained coy on the same topic.

If the Reds manage to hold onto all their current attacking stars for next season, they have more than enough firepower to wait around for Gakpo’s special contract to reach its end. The signing of Luis Diaz in January has done wonders for us in that regard.

But if we lose even one of our first-team attackers, a player like Gakpo would be welcomed by our fans. They saw our attack lead the team to three cup finals and a second-place finish this season.

And we certainly won’t settle for anything less when the next campaign starts, because that is the standard we have gotten used to under Jurgen Klopp.
