Transfer News: Liverpool and Real Madrid ‘frontrunners’ to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica

According to Portuguese outlet Record (h/t Liverpool.com), the UEFA Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool could decide the future of SL Benfica striker, Darwin Nunez.

It is claimed that the two UCL finalists are ‘frontrunners’ to sign the 22-year-old forward, who impressed massively in this season’s premier European club competition. He also has an £85million price tag on his head.

This news should be taken with a pinch of salt by the Reds fans. One would definitely wonder as to why a team winning the Champions League would then have a better chance of signing the South American star.

After all. both these teams have comfortably qualified for next season’s Champions League and it’s not like Nunez will get a medal if he joins them after their UCL triumph this summer.

Where to next for Nunez?

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if he is a striker that Jurgen Klopp can use in his system in the first place. He is young and has not really had a very long time at the pinnacle of the sport.

The valuation mentioned above is certainly big which would make sense for a top striker who has proved his worth and potential for an extended period of time. Also, he is a natural number nine who plays centrally.

Klopp has mentioned earlier this year how any striker who wants to play for LFC has to ‘work their socks off’. Roberto Firmino has shown over the years what the German boss demands from his number nine.

The Brazilian striker is adept at dropping deep and creating chances for our prolific wingers. His workrate off the ball is also something we rarely see in world-class number centre-forwards.

His unselfish nature, ability to create something for others in tight spaces. and defensive contributions have been an asset to us over the years. Can Nunez replicate that? This is a question only time can tell if the Reds somehow spend the cash on him after already signing Luis Diaz this January.
