According to the Independent, Manchester United have entered the race to sign Darwin Nunez
, who is on the transfer radar of Liverpool. The SL Benfica striker has had a breakthrough season at the Portuguese club, especially in the UEFA Champions League. His goals against Barcelona and the strike against Liverpool have shown the world what he is capable of.
Still just 22, there is time on his hands to fulfil his potential. But United are now prepared to battle the Reds in order to sign the Uruguayan international.
It is claimed that the forward has ‘favoured‘ a move to Anfield until now but his camp is open to hearing offers from Erik ten Hag’s team. If that is the case, then this news comes as a blow for Liverpool.
There is no doubt that the young striker knows where the net is. With 34 goals in 41 appearances across competitions this season, Nunez is certainly attracting attention from football watchers around the globe.
Those that have watched him play can tell that he isn’t similar to Roberto Firmino in his playing style. The former likes to get into scoring positions and is arguably an out-and-out number nine.
The Brazilian, on the other hand, has made a name for himself at LFC through his unselfish play as a false nine, who drops deep to create space for our wingers and also helps out in defence.
Could Nunez have a future at Liverpool? It would certainly be a nice sight to see a traditional number nine spearhead our attack. But with United now in the race, it wouldn’t be easy for the Reds if they really want their man.
Erik ten Hag is joining a Red Devils side that missed out on UEFA Champions League football for the upcoming season and has looked no way near a trophy-winning outfit. Our project at Anfield is much more attractive but whether that is enough to convince him to join our club is anyone’s guess.
