Transfer News: Saidou Sow scouted by Liverpool in Guinea vs Egypt
According to French outlet L’Equipe via Inside Futbol (h/t the Mirror), Liverpool sent scouts to watch Saidou Sow in Guinea’s game against Egypt.
Mohamed Salah’s Pharaohs won the AFCON qualifier by a 1-0 margin as Sow played the full 90 minutes during the game. He has come through the academy at Saint-Etienne and is now a first-team player for them.
It is also believed that the recommendation was made to LFC by Sow’s international teammate, Naby Keita. The Liverpool midfielder was also playing during that game but his team succumbed to an 87th-minute goal.
A defender of that age profile can benefit the Reds, in all honesty. Despite their immense contributions during the 2020/21 season, Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips are yet to convince a majority of our fanbase that they can be a first-team regular for us.
What next for Sow and LFC?
With Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk turning 31 in the next couple of months and Joe Gomez linked with a move to Aston Villa in recent weeks, the Reds would be wise to future-proof their backline.
Ibrahima Konate, in that regard, was a superb signing last summer. The Frenchman may not have featured a lot in the Premier League but he was clearly Jurgen Klopp’s preferred partner with van Dijk towards the business end of the UEFA Champions League campaign.
Sow would be something of an unknown quantity for most LFC fans, unless they follow the Guinean national team or St-Etienne closely. He already has 11 caps with his national team and made 14 club appearances this season.

It remains to be seen what the scouts had to report back to Anfield regarding Sow, but if the teenager impressed, then we could have a talented teenager on our hands.
