Official: SL Benfica confirm Darwin Nunez transfer to Liverpool on their website

In news that will please Liverpool fans around the globe, SL Benfica have confirmed the departure of their star striker Darwin Nunez to Anfield, as per their official website (h/t Liverpool Echo).

The announcement clarifies the amount of money they will receive in exchange for Nunez, a sight not so common these days in official statements from clubs. LFC will pay €75million in initial fees and a possible €25million in add-ons.

“In the early morning hours of this Monday (0:44 am), Sport Lisboa e Benfica – Futebol, SAD informed the Securities Market Commission (CMVM) that it had reached an agreement with Liverpool FC for the sale of all rights to the player Darwin Nunez, for the amount of €75m.”

The striker is believed to have agreed upon a six-year contract at the club which ties him to LFC for a long time. By the time this deal expires in the summer of 2028, he will be 28.

Good move, LFC

The 22-year-old star has shown all the signs of being a world-class striker someday- if he isn’t one already. His displays for SL Benfica have not gone unnoticed.

Nunez was particularly potent in the UEFA Champions League and scored twice against Liverpool in the quarter-finals as well. Hopefully, with a pre-season behind him, he can start for the Reds from gameweek one.

This signing also comes as a statement of intent from Liverpool. They have been up against the wall regarding the immediate future of Sadio Mane, but have replied to that in tremendous fashion.

Getting one of the hottest prospects in world football also, at least on paper, negates Manchester City getting themselves a highly-rated centre-forward in Erling Haaland. The Cityzens already won the Premier League this season.

And if they strengthened their team to an extent where the gap between them and LFC increases, Klopp would have had a big issue on his hands. But now, everyone at Liverpool can take a deep breath and relax- at least for now.
