LFC Transfer News: RB Leipzig prepare new contract offer for Liverpool target Christopher Nkunku with big release clause

According to German outlet Leipziger Volkszeitung (h/t Liverpool Echo), RB Leipzig are preparing a new contract for Liverpool transfer target, Christopher Nkunku.

The 24-year-old forward has taken the Bundesliga by storm this season and as a result, has attracted attention from the Reds. However, it is now said that the German club wants him to sign a new deal.

It would also contain a £50million release clause that will only kick in next summer. The question now arises if the Reds even need Nkunku.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Darwin Nunez is set to become a Liverpool player in a big-money deal. There is no way Jurgen Klopp signs such a highly-rated striker just for him to warm the bench.

No Nkunku to LFC?

Roberto Firmino is also a first-team regular when fit but Takumi Minamino can join Divock Origi in leaving Anfield. That does open up a space for the Reds to bring in a squad player to rotate in attack.

Diogo Jota has certainly shown he warrants a place in and around the starting XI and it is highly unlikely Nkunku settles for such a role at LFC. Hence, a move for the Frenchman doesn’t seem to be all that important right now.

Make no mistake, he is one of the most talented, versatile players in his age group right now in all of European football. Capable of playing anywhere in midfield and attack, the former PSG man recorded 35 goals and 19 assists in 50 games across all competitions this season.

But if he signs a new deal, it will restore a lot of power in Leipzig’s hands over his future this summer. This seems like a transfer move that can wait and it is best if the club puts this on the backburner for the time being.
