Manchester City enter the race for Liverpool transfer target David Raum

According to 90Min (h/t Liverpool.com), Pep  Guardiola’s Manchester City are set to battle against Liverpool for the signing of talented Bundesliga left-back David Raum.

Raum, a left-back by trade, had his big break at Greuther Furth in the 2020/21 season. Furth’s almost impossible promotion campaign was aided by the full-back’s 15 assists in the Bundesliga 2. His blistering displays in the second division earned him a move to Hoffenheim last summer.

Raum also performed admirably in the German top flight. In 32 league games, the 24-year-old left-back notched up 13 assists and three goals in his debut season in the Bundesliga. He’s also had a strong season for Germany, shining in UEFA Nations League matches most recently.

Raum’s ability to whip in dangerous crosses from wide areas, along with his technical skill, has made him a valuable asset for Germany, with many predicting that he will be the country’s first-choice left-back in the upcoming FIFA World Cup in 2022.

The 24-year-old’s efforts have been noted at the club level as well, with Liverpool among the clubs interested in signing him. The fact that a team of Liverpool’s calibre is interested in him now demonstrates how far he has progressed.

However, the Reds now have to compete with Manchester City in order to secure the transfer as Pep Guardiola’s team have recently entered the race to sign the talented left-back.

To get him away from Hoffenheim, they may have to pay his €30 million release clause (about £26 million). As a result, he’d get his first taste of Premier League action.

Raum may be better off choosing City – or one of his unnamed admirers, depending on who they are – over Liverpool if he wants to leave the Bundesliga.

While working under Klopp would be appealing, Liverpool also has left-back alternatives in Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas. Robertson remains one of the best in the world and Tsimikas has seen more playing time this season than last.

The Reds are more or less set to sign Aberdeen right-back Calvin Ramsay. The 18-year-old is one of the finest young players in his position and could spell the end of Liverpool’s pursuit of Raum.
