Transfer News: Liverpool set to seal shock return for Jay Spearing nine years after his Anfield exit
According to the Telegraph (Subscription Required), Liverpool are close to sealing a return for 33-year-old midfielder Jay Spearing.
Most LFC fans would tell you that our midfield needs strengthening, but this is perhaps the signing they wouldn’t have had in mind. Nevertheless, Spearing’s role is set to be restricted to the U23 squad.
Spearing would function in a ‘dual role‘ which would see him play with the development team and coach some of the younger age groups. The Englishman most recently played for Tranmere Rovers and is set to be released as a free agent this summer.
Spearing, born in Wallasey, came through our reserve squad but never really made a name for himself at Anfield. He did, however, have two seasons where he was knocking on the door for first-team minutes.
Spearing to seal LFC return
Spearing played a combined 45 senior games for the Reds in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons. These were dark times under Roy Hodgson, where Liverpool’s standards as a ‘big four’ team were in freefall.
Nevertheless, Spearing was sold to Bolton Wanderers in the summer of 2013. He then had a stint with Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool, and most recently, Merseyside-based minnows Tranmere.
And now, it seems like he is set for a return to his childhood club. He comes off the back of making 35 appearances across all competitions for the Super White Army last season.
He would, of course, bring with him a ton of experience when it comes to playing in England across the country’s top four divisions. Our U23 currently boasts names such as Jake Cain, Tyler Morton, and Leighton Clarkson.
If even one of these three central midfielders goes on to become an important senior player in the future, then the Reds could count themselves as a lucky team.
