Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool not interested in re-signing PSG star Georginio Wijnaldum

According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Liverpool are not interested in re-signing PSG star Georginio Wijnaldum in this summer transfer window. The midfielder left Anfield to move to France last year, but the move has not turned out the way he wanted to so far.

As such, claims were made recently that the Reds have been considering the possibility of a reunion with Wijnaldum this summer. In fact, they were stated to be engaged in discussions over the prospect of signing him. However, such talks have now been firmly shut down and have been slammed as “fake” at this moment.

That does make sense as it is believed among those at the club that they have concluded their transfer business for this summer. A new midfielder is not in the plans right now as they would only target one at the end of the next season, with Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund currently being shortlisted.

Good decision?

We already know at this point how Wijnaldum was allowed to depart because of his high wage demands. Furthermore, he is also on the wrong side of his thirties, which means we should rather look forward to the future instead of dwelling on the past for too long.

While the Dutchman has undoubtedly been great for us in the past, it is high time that we look ahead and bring in younger players to balance our options, with the likes of Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and James Milner being in the twilight of their playing careers.

We have a good blend of experienced heads and youngsters in our midfield as of now, which should be enough to help us get through the upcoming season before targeting someone younger like Bellingham next summer.

The likes of Thiago, Naby Keita, Henderson, Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Cutis Jones and Harvey Elliot do give us enough depth in the central midfield for the time being. That being said, that would change in the future, which aligns with our transfer plans after the upcoming season.

Romano has even revealed that our current priority is to tie down Keita on a new deal. Negotiations are set to take place shortly on that front, with the midfielder’s current contract expiring in 2023.

As such, it is understandable why we are focusing on maintaining our squad depth, for the time being, having already bolstered our ranks with the arrivals of Darwin Nunez, Calvin Ramsay and Fabio Carvalho.
