Transfer News: Newport County confirm loan signing of Liverpool defender Adam Lewis, James Rowberry gives his verdict

Newport County have confirmed the loan signing of Liverpool defender Adam Lewis on their official website ahead of the new season.

The 22-year-old left-back was playing for Livingston on a temporary basis last season and helped them to a seventh-place finish in the Scottish Championship. And now, he joins a club based in South Wales.

The team competes in League Two, the fourth tier of English football, and finished 11th in the last campaign. Lewis has played for Amiens SC and Plymouth Argyle on loan in the past, but only has one senior appearance for the Reds.

That came under Jurgen Klopp in February of 2020, when he played the full 90 minutes of Liverpool’s 1-0 FA Cup win over Shrewsbury Town in a replay of their fourth-round tie.

A good move for all parties

But since then, he has failed to garner even a single minute for Klopp’s side. That is largely due to Andrew Robertson’s form, with Alberto Moreno, and now Kostas Tsimikas, playing as a backup to him in recent seasons.

Lewis’ pedigree as a potential first-team star for the Reds would also be doubted with each passing year. Joining a League Two side at the age of 22 isn’t the best look for a player who would aim to become an important senior player for a club as big as Liverpool.

But every player doesn’t develop and achieves success at the same rate. The examples of players such as Robbo, Rickie Lambert and Jamie Vardy have proven that.

Hopefully, Lewis comes back with ample playing time under James Rowberry, who sounds excited to have the 22-year-old Englishman on board.

“I’m delighted to welcome Adam to the club and I’m excited to see how his qualities will improve us as a team. I have no doubt that his experience at higher levels, as well as his international pedigree, will be a huge help to our processes to take the club forward.”
