According to the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg might leave Anfield once again on loan as the Dutch national returns to pre-season training.
Van den Berg signed in 2019 from PEX Zwolle and made his debut in the same year. But the 20-year-old will return to Liverpool after an 18-month loan spell at Preston North End.
In the Dutchman’s time in the Championship, the defender has established himself at the Lancashire club. He still has some way to go before being able to throw his name into first-team contention on Merseyside.
The 20-year-old’s time out in the second tier of English football has impressed many at Liverpool and the player looks set to join Jurgen Klopp’s side for pre-season.
But with sides in the Premier League, Bundesliga and La Liga eyeing a move for Van den Berg, the young defender looks set to be sent out on loan once again.
At 20 years of age, Van den Berg is an exciting prospect and could possibly man Liverpool’s defence in the future, replacing compatriot Virgil van Dijk. But the young centre-back has a long way to go before establishing himself at Anfield.
A loan move to a top-flight European club is the perfect next step for the progression of the Dutchman’s career. Playing regular competitive football in a side that can guarantee game time to the 20-year-old is essential for his growth and development.
While staying in and around the first team could help Van den Berg learn a lot from stalwarts like Van Dijk and Joel Matip, first-team football could be hard to come by, with Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate the other options at Klopp’s disposal.
With this in mind, if the 20-year-old wants to be the future of Liverpool’s defence, establishing himself in another decent European side will help the Dutchman make his case.
It remains to be seen where Van den Berg ends up and if the Dutch national gets the first-team action needed for his evolution.
