Liverpool U23 goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga set for loan move to Macclesfield FC
Liverpool under-23 goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga is on his way to Macclesfield FC on loan for the 2022/23 season, as per Fabrizio Romano. The 19-year-old wanted regular game time and will move to the side that will play in English football’s eighth tier next season.
The young Brazilian has played for the Reds under-18 and under-23 sides since 2020. Pitaluga was on the bench for the first team on a couple of occasions.
The youngster appeared 21 times for the under-23 side last season and kept four clean sheets. Standing 1.93m tall, the Brazilian is a giant in front of the goal.
Liverpool currently have one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Alisson has been crucial in the Anfield side winning trophies, helping the team remain more solid. Moving from Roma in 2018 for a hefty fee, the 29-year-old has been the difference.
The arrival of Alisson turned the team from title challengers to title winners. In 183 appearances for the club, the Brazilian has kept 86 clean sheets. Pitaluga’s compatriot is a role model for keepers who want to make a name for themselves at Anfield.
Kelleher an example for Pitaluga
Jurgen Klopp’s second preference, Caoimhin Kelleher, joined the Liverpool academy back in 2015. The Irishman played regularly for the under-18 and under-23 sides before getting a chance in the first team.
Now, the 23-year-old has proven himself as a decent backup to Alisson. Last season the Irish international made eight appearances for the first team and impressed fans with his performances. He is now ahead of Adrian in the pecking order.
Kelleher has gained the trust of the German manager. The Irish keeper started the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea and helped the side win it in the penalty shootout.
Pitaluga was the fourth choice last season and has now decided to leave the club and look for regular game time. However, the 19-year-old will come back next season. And the example of Kelleher coming through the ranks to command a place in the squad is an example for players to follow.
