Transfer News: Liverpool are pushing for the signature of Cody Gakpo from PSV
According to Voetbal International (h/t LiverpoolEcho), Liverpool have held talks with the agent of PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo.
Gakpo, a left-winger by trade, has risen to the top of the Dutch football scene following a standout 2021/22 season. The forward has been a part of the PSV team for a long time, but this past season—especially after Donyell Malen left—he pushed his game to a whole new level.
The 23-year-old scored 21 goals throughout 46 games in all competitions. In the Eredivisie alone, he recorded 12 goals and 13 assists, but that total was insufficient to help PSV win the league. Ajax defeated the Dutch heavyweights by a narrow margin of two points.
Gakpo has drawn the attention of numerous clubs all across Europe as a result of his brilliant achievements in the Netherlands. One of the teams keeping a close eye on the Dutchman is Liverpool.
It is believed that the Reds even held a formal discussion with his agent to evaluate the possibility of the transfer. However, Jurgen Klopp’s team is not alone as Arsenal and Manchester City seem to have also talked with the entourage with similar intentions in mind.
On top of that, Leeds United have joined the race making it intense for any concerned teams. PSV want £34m for their prize asset and if he does well at the FIFA World Cup- granted that he makes the plane to Qatar- there is no telling how much his valuation could rise.
Gakpo’s potential is undeniable, but the Premier League is different from the Eredivisie, so it’s unclear whether the PSV winger will be able to perform similarly there. New surroundings, different opponents- he may take a while to get used to the scene.
But time is something the Reds have right now. Mohamed Salah is set to stay at the club for at least three more years after putting pen to paper on a new deal. Gakpo can become a useful asset if one of our current forwards leaves in the near future.
Gakpo, 22, can play both the right and centre, but it seems very unlikely that he will receive much regular playing time at Liverpool right now- if he were to sign for us this summer.

The Dutchman would be best served to continue his development at PSV and move when he has a greater chance of joining Liverpool’s crowded frontline.
But then again, he would perhaps know what’s best for his career. If he is okay with being rotated in our starting lineup, then great for us. If not, this isn’t a signing we urgently need anyway.
