Transfer News: Juventus hope Liverpool bid for Matthijs de Ligt to incite bidding war with Chelsea

Juventus are hoping that Liverpool make a bid for defender Matthijs de Ligt but only to incite a bidding war, as per Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (h/t Liverpool Echo).

The Bianconeri are apparently unhappy with Chelsea’s latest offer for the Dutch defender. Now 22, de Ligt is fast approaching the prime years of his career.

He was a man in demand when he left Ajax for Juve back in 2019. And the Italian outfit is now hoping that clubs like PSG, Manchester City, and Liverpool make a bid for him to start a bidding war.

The Blues have seemingly tabled a £64.5million for his services, which falls short of the Serie A giants’ £85million price tag. That is certainly a massive ask for most teams.

What should LFC do?

Sure, he has a lot of years still ahead of him, but he has had an average time in Italy and with Holland. It is perhaps his age profile that is driving up his valuation in Juve’s eyes.

So, what should the Reds do? Stay away, that’s what. £85million is crazy money for a young defender when they already have a 25-year-old Joe Gomez struggling for starts.

Ibrahima Konate joined last summer while Joel Matip is still going strong. Even if LFC did want him, they would have to battle a Chelsea side desperate for his signature after their defensive exodus this summer.

It is better to save our funds and utilise them on a player who can instantly strengthen our team in the present and more importantly, for the future. Perhaps Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund? Let’s hope so.
