Transfer News: Liverpool want to offer Joe Gomez new contract amid Aston Villa links
According to Sky Sports (h/t Birmingham Live), Liverpool have opened talks with Joe Gomez for a new contract to stave off interest from other Premier League clubs. The 25-year-old’s future at the club is seemingly a priority for Julian Ward.
Aston Villa are one of the clubs linked with going after the English defender, but there have been no contacts as of yet between any parties. With two years left on his contract, the centre-back has opened talks with the club to extend it.
Having joined the club in 2015, Gomez has been in and around the squad for seven years now. Jurgen Klopp has faith in the defender and the German manager has kept the player around, even though he hasn’t gotten a lot of minutes of late.
Injuries have been a reason for the lack of minutes Gomez has had. The defender has missed 136 games for the Reds since he joined. Still, the 25-year-old is one of the players in Klopp’s plans every season. In his time at the club, the centre-back has made 142 appearances for Liverpool.
Gomez not given opportunities last season
Last season though, the player managed to stay fit but wasn’t given many opportunities. With the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate having more trust from Klopp, it seems the player is lower down the list for the manager now than he was a few years back.
The French centre-back is the player Klopp has trusted when either Matip or Van Dijk have been left out. The defender played a big part for the Merseyside club, especially in the Champions League, starting the final.
But fans will hope Gomez stays at the club. While he hasn’t been given the opportunities, the 25-year-old is a key member of the squad. Liverpool is a side that wants to challenge for every title.

To do that, a deep squad is necessary, and experienced backups like Gomez are required to compete in every competition. Having four quality centre-backs is something a club of our stature must have, with Gomez’s versatility to slot in at left-back or right-back coming as an additional bonus.
