Divock Origi explains the reason for joining AC Milan after leaving Liverpool

Divock Origi left Liverpool as a free agent and his decision to join AC Milan was down to the Italian club’s history. Speaking in his first interview with his new club (h/t Liverpool Echo), the Belgian explained the reasons he joined the Rossoneri.

“Being able to win is the biggest thing, as well as seeing the process of building a team, being able to win championships, what it takes to win and be able to perform in difficult moments and big moments.”

The 27-year-old striker feels it’s the right age for him to move to Milan and his conversations with officials at the Italian champions made his decision easier. The atmosphere around the club and being able to play in the iconic stadium is a big draw.

“Playing here and being able to get that atmosphere at San Siro was always a special feeling.”

“I saw the way the team played, the way the coach managed the team, the way the fans are, the history in the club: all these things are elements that led to me being able to come here and join the club.”

Origi’s visit to the San Siro last year with the Liverpool side in the Champions League was an amazing experience. It was memorable not just because the Belgian scored the winning goal but also because of the vibe around the stadium.

“You could feel the football culture and it is the small details like the fans and the way they know the club. Those are things I really love – they really care a lot about the club.”

Origi joins another historic club

In Origi’s new side, the player gets to be part of a squad with distinguished names. Two Premier League icons, Olivier Giroud and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will welcome the 27-year-old to the club.

The Belgian has to compete against these greats alongside other talented players for a place in the Italian champion’s side.

With other significant figures like Paolo Maldini at the helm of the club, Milan are a big draw for any player. After faltering for a few years, the side seems to be back on top, showcasing their resurgence by winning the scudetto last season.

Since joining Liverpool in 2015, Origi has always been a utility player, especially under Jurgen Klopp. The Belgian has found it hard to establish his name in the first XI with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino performing at a high level for years.

But the Anfield icon has still managed to carve a place for himself in the history books of the Merseysideside club, coming up with some historic goals in his time.

One of the most memorable moments in football history was Trent Alexander-Arnold taking a quick corner and Origi slotting it past the Barcelona keeper to lead the Reds to a final we eventually won.
