Newcastle United join race to sign Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio amidst Liverpool interest

Newcastle United are amongst the clubs interested in signing Liverpool-linked Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio, according to AS (h/t Liverpool Echo). The Magpies are working on a deal to sign the 26-year-old this summer.

Apart from being linked with the Reds, Arsenal are the other Premier League side associated with the Spaniard’s name. Asensio has just one year left on his current contract keeping him at the Bernabeu.

Joining Los Blancos in 2015, the youngster made a name for himself in a side with world-class attacking players. The 26-year-old took the opportunities he was given and shined at a young age for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

But bad luck with injuries have slowed the development of many youngsters and Asensio is one of those players. A serious cruciate ligament rupture forced him to be on the sidelines for eight months.

Since the unfortunate setback Asensio’ suffered in the 2019/20 season, fans who’ve seen him regularly have noticed a change in the winger’s performances. The 26-year-old hasn’t been the same player ever since and appears to have lost some of his inspiration.

While the Spaniard has still found a place for himself in the squad, a place in the starting XI has become rare over the years. Under Carlo Ancelotti last season, the former Mallorca man started 23 games.

Liverpool are a side currently on the up. We have made certain offensive additions to the side over the years and supporters will feel their quality over the last few years has been better than Asensio’s.

Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota will contend for a place in the starting XI while Mohamed Salah will be a guaranteed starter. There will be a lot of competition in the team and it will not be easy for Asensio to make his mark.

Newcastle are rebuilding under Eddie Howe and new ownership. After last season, the Geordies will look to make progress in the league if they can. And Asensio can be a statement signing.

The World Cup in Qatar is also nearby. Asensio missed out on the Euro 2020 squad. Considering a team that can guarantee regular football is an option for the Spaniard to show his skills to Luis Enrique until the start of the most prestigious tournament in football.
