According to SkyBet (h/t Liverpool Echo), Graeme Souness and Roy Keane picked their favourites for the title as the Liverpool legend picked the Reds as the favourites to win the Premier League over Manchester City.
Souness backed the Anfield side to lift the coveted trophy next season. Last season the Merseysiders narrowly lost out by one point. On the final day of the season, it looked like the title could go either way, but Manchester City pipped it in the final minutes of the campaign.
“I think Liverpool will win it. They came so close last year.”
Manchester United legend Keane, on the other hand, picked city rivals in Sky Blue as his front runners. The Cityzens have won four of the last five Premier League campaigns with emphatic numbers and performances.
“Man City. Brilliant players, they’ve obviously improved, an unbelievable striker and they’ve got one of the greatest managers ever in Pep (Guardiola).”
Since Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have entered English football’s first tier, every fan in world football has envied the dominant but different styles of play the two managers have imposed. Liverpool and City have been the two teams to emulate over the past few years.
The Reds and the Cityzens have gone toe to toe. After the side from Manchester won the Premier League with 100 points in 2017/18, the Merseysiders were on their necks the following season, losing out on the title by just one point.
Liverpool finally managed to lift the long-awaited league trophy after 30 years in the 2019/20 campaign. The Reds triumphed over almost every opposition, losing just three games the whole season and lifting the title with 99 points.
Injuries left us shorthanded in defence in the 2020/21 season and we barely managed to get into the top four. But with Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip back to full fitness, the 2021/22 season was again neck and neck.
The only team to have stopped City from winning three Premier League titles in a row under Guardiola have been Liverpool. It wouldn’t be audacious to predict the same outcome at the end of next season.
