Journo: Liverpool ‘accelerating’ contract talks for 25-year-old attacker

Liverpool accelerating contract talks with Diogo Jota

According to journalist Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports via Anfield Central (h/t the Mirror), Liverpool are ‘accelerating’ contract talks with star forward Diogo Jota.

The Portuguese international moved to Merseyside from Wolves back in 2020. Since then, he has largely impressed with his goal-scoring abilities, especially in key games.

His current deal expires in 2025. But it seems that the Reds now want to keep him here for even longer, which makes sense given what happened with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

The Egyptian star has renewed his contract until 2025 while Mane left for Bayern Munich this summer. The fact that they were set to enter the last year of their respective contracts made Liverpool fans nervous.

The correct decision

And that would have made our board anxious as well- apart from the fact that it would add leverage in favour of the two players in contract talks.

Salah has, as a result, been put on a deal that sees him earn around £350,000 a week. It is better to secure the 25-year-old Jota’s future before it’s too late.

There shouldn’t be a rush, but it is important that the club also financially compensates the Portuguese forward with an amount that better reflects his importance in this team.

Not only is he a versatile forward ready to compete for a starting position right now, but he can be the successor to Roberto Firmino and even Salah if and when they leave- given their age.

Hopefully, the Reds wrap this deal up soon. Jota is currently out injured and absent from our pre-season games due to exacerbating his hamstring injury

in a training session earlier this week.
