Transfer News: Liverpool have a ‘strong chance’ of signing Matheus Nunes
As per Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have a strong chance of signing Sporting CP star Matheus Nunes.
The midfielder apparently has a £42.5million asking price. The Primeira club has already sold Joao Palhinha to Fulham and has signed Francisco Trinaco on loan from FC Barcelona.
It is said that they would now enter the market only to offload players. The 23-year-old midfielder can play as a number eight as well as a number six.
He would be ideal to play in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield three, given his comfort level in possession as well as the ability to help his teammates in defence.
Nunes to LFC?
But it remains to be seen if the Reds make a move for him later this summer. The Reds smartly concluded deals for Fabio Carvalho, Calvin Ramsay and Darwin Nunez before jetting out to Thailand.
It showed that the club clearly had some targets in mind and did their business early on to give the new boys maximum time to integrate with their teammates.
But then again, there is a glaring void in midfield- if not now, then there would be one in the future when the likes of James Milner, Jordan Henderson, and Thiago Alcantara can no longer play regularly due to their age.
Georginio Wijnaldum already left last year and the Reds have still not signed a senior central midfielder. Nunez is young and talented, and the price tag isn’t massively exorbitant. This move makes sense.

But it remains to be seen if Liverpool actually formalise their interest in the coming weeks for the midfielder. It is largely believed that they probably won’t sign another player this summer and instead target Jude Bellingham in 2023.
